Secret Teachings of Moses

Chapter 17: The Archangel Samael

All Archangels relate to the life force, but there is one specifically in command of the life force: the Archangel Samael סםאל.

Samael1 is the Archangel that relates to this serpentine-like subtle force of sex; this is why the serpent is one of his symbols. Among the symbols of Samael is the standing serpent, which is the serpentine-like force that Samael controls, whether in the animal kingdom amongst the Chaioth, or within the human kingdom amongst the Chaim (“the Living” a reference to Initiates who are awakening consciousness).

The Chaim are in Otz Chaim (the Tree of Life) above Yesod. They depend on Samael, since in Yesod, Samael’s essence is that serpentine life-force. This is why when you study Samael in relation with nature and astrology, you find that Samael’s life-force relates with two signs that in our physicality are joined by the medulla (the serpent): the sign of Aries and the sign of Scorpio.

The astrological sign Scorpio is in Yesod (sex) and is related with water, while Aries rules the head and is related with fire. As you know, the scorpion has poison (Hebrew: Sam סם) in its tail; thus we can say that the sexual force manifests as a polarized force in Scorpio. Yet, Aries, the ram, rules the head as fire and relates to the three primary forces, the first triangle of Otz Chaim: Kether, Chokmah, and Binah; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The serpent is the life-energy, the Kundalini that through initiation emerges from the chakra Muladhara and rises to the chakra Sahasrara in the pineal gland. When the Kundalini awakens, it goes straight up from the coccyx through the spinal column to the pineal gland. Thus, if we visualize it astrologically, it goes from Scorpio to Aries, which are both ruled by the Archangel Samael. This is why it is stated in Kabbalah that Samael rides on the serpent and operates through the serpent. He is not the serpent, but works through the serpent.

It is not that the three primary forces (Father, Son and Holy Spirit; Kether, Chokmah and Binah, in the brain, in Aries) that manifest through Jah-Havah Elohim in Daath work through Samael in Yesod by means of lust. Rather, it is Jah-Havah Elohim, Binah, working the life force of Samael as Shaddai-El-Chai in Yesod/Scorpio. It depends upon how we use the life-force of Samael, namely: either as Chaioth (beasts) or Chaim (human beings).

And the serpent was craftier... —Genesis 3:1

Rabbi Isaac said: the serpent is the wicked inclination [towards sensation-desire], which [in the sexual act] incites one to [orgasm] sin [in Klipoth]. Rabbi Judah said, it is a true serpent [true serpentine life-force]. They approached Rabbi Shimon, who said: both interpretations are correct. It was [the evolving life-force of] Samael and he was seen riding on the serpent [that is, controlling that life-force]. The image of the serpent is Satan [that is, the adversary or desire-life-Chaioth-force], namely the evil inclination [towards sensation-desire] that incites humans [better said: intellectual chaioth] to [orgasm] sin [in Klipoth] and then [the filthy outcome of it] ascends [as Cain] to [the brain, to] demand punishment above [from Jah-Havah Elohim-Binah in the pineal gland]. They are both the same [chai = life-force from Yesod]. You can say that the [Kundabuffer] serpent is the evil inclination [towards Klipoth] and [its opposite] is a true [Kundalini] serpent. – Zohar

And Jah-Havah said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole [spinal column]: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. —Numbers 21:8

Remember that Jah-Havah Elohim (Binah, the Holy Spirit, in the head) is related to the pineal gland, where you find his relationship with the sign of Aries (Samael) whose symbol is the ram (the lamb), which is associated with Christ; yet Samael also rules in Scorpio, a sign of water, the sexual life force of Yesod (Shaddai El Chai).

In the name Jah-Chavah יחוה, Jah is in the head and represents the masculine aspect. When we say Hallelu-Jah, we are pronouncing Jah יה, which is Kether, the Father in the higher level of Atziluth; yet the feminine aspect of Jah-Chavah יחוה is Chavah חוה (Eve) who is in the bottom, in Yesod (sex). So, when we name the God Iod-Chavah יחוה, Jehovah, or Jah-Havah, Jah יה is the head (of the serpent) and Chavah חוה (Eve) is the sex (the tail of the serpent); behold here again the word Chai חי; it is written that Chavah חוה derives from the word Chai חי which means life:

And Adam [Jah הי, the brain] called his wife’s name Eve [Chavah חוה]; because she [the sexual organ] was the mother of all living [Chai חי]. – Genesis 3:20

Behold then the names associated with chai יח (life):

  • Shaddai-El-Chai שדי אל חי: the Almighty Living God
  • Chaioth חית: animals
  • Otz Chaim עץ חיים: tree of lives above Yesod
  • Chavah חוה: (Eve) the woman associated with the serpent

As it is written, the serpent talked to the woman and became a friendly element to the woman. The woman that we are talking about here is an esoteric symbol of the sexual organ, whether in the man or woman. We also know, physically speaking, that the female body also represents Chavah חוה (Eve). Yet, when we refer to the book of Genesis, according to the mysteries of Daath (Gnosis), we have to specify that Adam (the brain) in the book of Genesis 3:20 called Chavah חוה (Eve) the mother of Chai חי, all life, since she represents our sexual organs. This is how Gnostics understand Chavah חוה, since the male and female gametes of life (Chai חי) emerge from the sexual organs of humans, animals, and plants.

Remember that Malkuth (the physical body), together with Yesod (the vital body), form the Garden of Eden. Thus, when we talk about the Garden of Eden in relation with the microcosm, that is, in relation with us, we have to understand that we are talking about our physicality. Therefore, comprehend that when the serpent appears in Genesis, it is not a physical animal or Chaiah חוה, but a life-force, a Chai חי inside of us. In other words, this Chaiah or animal-life is a life-energy that manifests in different levels and as Shatan שטן, animal desire, it appears in Malkuth (the physical world) within all Chaioth חית (animals).

This Chaiah חיה (life-force, the serpent, Shatan, animal desire) appears within every bull, lion, eagle, fish; it appears in different levels within different animals so that each one of them can channel the life forces from nature. Yet, in our humanoid physical body—which is our own particular nature, our own particular Eden—we have all of those life-forces circulating as energies. In other words, we have all of those Chaioth (life-forces); therefore, we have to understand that in the Bible, in Hebrew, we read:

Veh ha Nachash ו ה נחש

And the serpent...

Many interpreters translate this verse as “Now the serpent.” But the true translation is “And the serpent” because the first letter that appears in that verse is Vav ו which in itself implies “the serpent.” So when we read “And the serpent” immediately we associate that “and” with our microcosmic Vav ו (our spine). Hence, we focus on our spinal column, which relates to the letter Vav ו in our physicality.

“And the serpent” means the fiery life force of the spinal column, the Vav ו. Thus, Genesis 3:1 refers to a life force related to the spinal column but in the field (Shaddai) or chakra Muladhara related to Yesod (sex). The field of Genesis 3:1 does not refer to the top of the spinal column, the head, or the middle, but to the bottom, the coccyx, which is Shaddai.

The serpent was the most subtle energy in Shaddai, the field, the Sephirah Yesod, among the beasts (Chaioth) or subtle life energies that go into sex. For example, Behemoth בהמות (Job 40:15) is that pure animal fire (Chai or Chi) around the lower abdomen which also goes into the field of Yesod. So, the sexual energy and all of the energies that circulate in our physical body relate to many subtle life forces of nature; but the serpent is the most subtle life force that we have in our physical body, since it is the sexual potency. Therefore, the sexual act is the field where we find that subtle force, the force of the serpent in action. This serpent is Lucifer, or “carrier of the light.” The carrier of the life force of God is the carrier of Shaddai El Chai. Lucifer is the most subtle force that manifests in our physical body, in the field of Yesod, that is, in Shaddai.

1(Hebrew סםאל) A great Archangel who has been assisting humanity for ages. He has been known by many names throughout our history, but he is perhaps best known as Ares, Mars, the God of War. His war is always a spiritual one, the war against the corruption of the human mind. Knowing this helps the reader understand why the writings and teachings of Samael Aun Weor are so direct and so potent.
