I often have difficulty sustaining my energy of sexual arousal long enough to practice sexual magic. I notice that the energy is stronger or weaker depending on what is the focus of my mental attention. I'm concerned because I feel the energy is stronger when I visualise images related to the female body but I'm afraid that relying on such a visualization may be reinforcing my lustful ego. During sexual magic, I have read that I should focus my mind on drawing the sexual forces inward and upward to even doing the ham sah pranayama. But often it seems that when I focus only on pranayama visualizations like that, I loose the sexual feeling of arousal completely. On what should I focus my mind if I feel energetically weak?

To be honest, it might be that this problem is just caused by sleep deprivation. My family duties take up most of the day so I cut back on sleep a little bit to make time for practice. I read about the master Samael staying up at night for his practices so I am hoping there is a way to do all those practices and still have some energy left at the end of the day.

You must develop discernment, the capacity of the consciousness to distinguish between lust and chastity.

What does water taste like? What is wine like? You know the difference through experience.

Observe yourself and remember your Being, for "by your fruits you will know yourself."

Contemplation is born from discernment and constitutes a rare and spontaneous flower that blossoms within our consciousness when it is strengthened through rigorous self-observation and remembrance of الله Allah (may He be praised and exalted).

Focus on the presence of your Divine Mother, who is chastity!

See the remedy cited in the following thread:

Joyful in hope, suffering in tribulation, be thou constant in thy prayer.

Benedictis, qui venit in nomine Domini. Osanna in excelsis.

"Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest!"

My apologies... I marked this thread as resolved, and your answer was helpful. But after thinking on it, I have another question so I marked it back as unresolved.

In your reply, you recommended focusing on the presence of my divine mother. I can see how that would help. But I have two different images of her in my mind. One is celibate and distant like an image of the virgin Mary in a Catholic church, and the other is more sexually attractive. I feel conflicted about feeling sexually aroused at the sight of my divine mother. It's a nice feeling but I feel afraid that visualising her image in that way is disrespectful or even harmful. I read somewhere (sorry I don't recall where) that the male partner should see his divine mother in his wife and the female partner should see her divine father in her husband. But I'm concerned about the idea that I'm having sex with my divine mother. To be honest, part of me likes that thought but I'm afraid that I ought not to encourage that part of me to develop any further.

That you feel conflicted about feeling aroused regarding the Divine Mother indicates that you are striving to be chaste in the sexual act, which is good.

However, remember that the Divine Mother is not some anthropomorphic figure in the clouds, but an energy in inside of you, here and now. She is the very sexual creative power of God inside you.

To imagine is to see. You can imagine your Divine Mother without form, since She is the mother of all forms.

And yes, we must learn to love our spouse as if she is the other half of Jehovah Elohim: a husband must view his wife as Shakti, while the wife must view her husband as Lord Shiva during the sexual act.

Thank you Almustafa and Benedictus for your replies. They are both very helpful. I have one further question on this subject. I would very much appreciate it if you can share some insight on it:

How can one distinguish between mental states that are lustful and those that are chaste?

In the gross physical sphere of malkuth, I understand that fornication and chastity are clearly and easily distinguished by the occurrence of the spasm, or lack thereof. More subtly, in yesod, I understand fornication to be any wasteful issue of energy from the vital body. But how does one make the distinction in the mental and astral spheres?

I ask this in relation to my previous posts, because contemplating an image of my divine mother in order to awaken the sexual force feels similar to the kind of imagination I used to use to arouse myself when masturbating. I stopped that habit in the physical sphere but I'm afraid that I might be still be continuing it in more subtle ways.

Perhaps another way of expressing this is to say that, based on your previous replies, I think that I was already contemplating my divine mother when I masturbated in the past, but I was contemplating her in a way that was disrespectful and harmful to her. So I'm wondering, how does one know that his contemplation of her is chaste?
