If we are meditating on a certain ego (for example an instance of lust) and become fascinated by it, are we actually feeding and strengthening that ego in those moments?

Therefore when we retrospect, we must no ruminate (identify with desire), but comprehend it. Comprehension begins the work of annihilation (fana) in order to produce subsistence or awakening within the Being (baqa).
