The 2011 verson has 588 pages and the 2005 verson has 680 pages according to amazon. Which verson will suit a newbie like myself? And what is the difference between the two?

Either edition will do. That is probably a typo on Amazon since if you refer to the book's page number here on the site it states the newest edition has 680 pages.
It is an advanced work though so do not expect to grasp what is written there quickly or easily. Some understanding of Kabbalah will help you navigate it better.

We made effort to redesign the newest edition so that it would fit on fewer pages, thus reducing the cost. Did you notice that the price went down?
