Master Samael Aun Weor mentions Afro-cuban beats, etc. as playing to our lower desires and being very bad. What specific types of music should be avoided? As a musician; this is of great interest to me. I play pianos and keyboards in a variety of styles. Is electronic music harmful?  What genre's of music and what types of instruments/instrumentation should be avoided?

Well, the answer is most forms of popular music should be avoided. You should begin to meditate deeply on it and become cognizant of what different types of music do to your consciousness. The best music is classical music because it usually contains very good spiritual principles within it. There are many forms of traditional music or folk music that carries different levels of values that could be considered neutral or perhaps beneficial depending on the music.

Music that deals with materialism, sex, violence, anger, or the fascination of life such as stories of romance and fame are just feeding the ego. Some are worse than others.

Lots of types of music can feel good, have a catchy tune or help us 'cope' with life, etc., but in the end almost all forms of popular music have no spiritual values, and the vast majority is completely negative. People can become so saturated in this type of music, it really shapes one's thoughts and feelings and can easily become a obstacle in spiritual work. The great classical composers were inspired by their inner God to compose music that contains very highly elevated, abstract, spiritual content that motivates and nourishes the consciousness.
