This is the path of suffering on behalf of humanity and the smaller brothers (or in other words animals), and I am talking about killing insects.

I have asked a question like this before here, or it could have been the old forums, I have trouble recalling the visual memory. In any case, the exchange went something like this: if you have insects in your home, it is usually the result of a filthy environment.

Which simply is not true in many cases, or is beyond my spectrum of control in any case, as I do live with filthy people who insist on keeping very messy rooms, and in a forest environment. But as it is, the house is undergoing renovations and still has imperfect doors and windows, allowing the insects to enter upon chemically sensing heat and food, in what is becoming a colder and eventually freezing environment.

I am quite set on purchasing some diatomaceous earth and spreading it about to deal with this situation. This broadens the extent in which I'll be killing them.

So that is my concern. Really at this point I'm just trying to get an idea of how to weigh this. This [insects crawling and attempting to penetrate my living conditions] can upset my meditations, this can make me not want to do Viparita Karani Mudra on the floor, or all of the other practices that involve laying on a mat or what have you.

The problem persists for almost half the year and has very bad psychological effects on me.

Really when it comes down to it, attempting to deal with this problem in this way is an attempt to deal with my own psyche. In many areas of my life I have been changing who I am friends with, changing my habits, and so forth, in order to increase the grade of quality of my energies and attain stabilization of my mind stream. These little buggers will interfere greatly with my very weak and non ascetic mind. I am the type of person who is very bothered by these types of things.

To be clear I'm quite set on this, my intuition is guiding me to stabilize and to dominate my internal and external conditions. But when I hear about things like the Dali Lama not wanting to even kill mosquitoes, then it kind of makes you wonder why, when you're about to do whatever is necessary to keep your living conditions proper.

Every action is karma, because "karma" means "action". We pay for all of our actions, every action causes a effects in many more ways that we can intellectually comprehend. The Tibetan monks who watched the nuns being raped and killed by the Red Army obtained karma for not doing whatever was necessary to stop those crimes. Nevertheless, they would have also received karma for killing or hurting those soldiers, but of course a different type of karma. Now, your problem with insects is truly insignificant compared to that scenario, but every action has is cost. The question you have to answer is what is the cost of killing them vs. not killing them. You have to make the decision yourself.

Thank you for your reply. We are now deeper into the fall season with the frosts and cold temperatures and it appears that the insect problem is only minor this year, thus far. We have made various modifications to our household which impedes their presence and the weather was unfavorable for their proliferation this year so hopefully I can keep countermeasures to a minimum. It is true that we are always generating karma through action and inaction, what is correct is a matter for our Interior God to determine. Joan of Arc killed humans in great scores and this was the divine will of her God, so I guess it all depends upon ethics. For me, it feels wrong to take excessive measures against a problem that barely exists right now. However if they significantly disrupted my quality of life, then I feel that would give me a little more leeway as I have more than enough difficult problems to deal with, and there needs to be some flexibility in order to endure the difficult ordeals life presents us with, I feel. They will all die anyways with the cold, so hopefully mother nature will do the killing and I can progress happily without interfering with that process.
