A few weeks ago I had just finished a short meditation before going to bed. During my meditation I was trying to understand the nature of my mind. I then went to bed. I'm pretty knew to gnosis and don't project at will, usually I start to fall asleep and begin to feel the vibrations of the astral projection beginning. I am awake during all of it and visit different places till I awaken in my body. I really enjoy these rare occurrences. Back until a few weeks ago.
As soon as I felt the vibrations throughout my body I knew this was different and became scared. The tunnel I was traveling through was dark red and rocks were falling all around me. All of a sudden I was in a war zone tanks everywhere, explosions going off around me. I became so terrified I fell asleep and didn't realize I was in the astral plane. I started running for my life. I went through a tunnel, a body was hanging at the end of it I screamed and kept running and was caught in a trap. Unable to get out I started trying to dig my way out. I called for my innermost and begged for his help. No answer.
I was once helped out of a hole when I called to him, another time I was in an awful place and when I asked where I was I heard an answer, klipoth. But this time no answer, no help. I cried out to him begging pleading for for help and nothing. The area where I was flooded I could feel the way the water entered my nostrils and felt the burning sensation of the water entering my lungs when I no longer could hold my breath. I drowned, as soon as I closed my eyes in the astral I awoke in my body. Ever since then I have been terrified to have an astral projection and be taken to a similar place.
I feel that what scared me the most was feeling so alone, I have always felt as if someone was with me watching over me in the astral this is the only time I felt alone. Every time I feel a projection I wake my self up I'm too scared to go there again. How do I get past this fear? And how do I find the courage to face my egos? I feel like a coward please help. Thanks.

This is a good experience to have, since it will teach you to become more mature.

As we awaken our occult faculties, novel experiences begin to unfold, some spiritual, inspiring and divine, and some of a very disturbing nature. What will get you past your fear is further experimentation and experience. You have to remember that you cannot receive "physical" or material harm within the internal dimensions. Those subtle bodies are protoplasmic, since the astral plane is governed by different laws, such as levitation and elasticity. The lunar astral and mental bodies are matter and energy, but not like in Malkuth, our physical world, the latter which is very dense and materialistic. Therefore, you cannot be injured during sleep.

Also, you have to become aware that all beings project into the astral plane when physical sleep takes hold. Therefore, to have fears about astral projections is the same as having fear over the process of breathing. We have to breathe, or we will perish. The same with projecting into the astral plane during the hours of sleep. If the soul does not leave the body, then the Lingam-Sarira, the Vital Body, cannot rejuvenate the physical body. People who suffer from insomnia cannot project out of the body; they suffer because they cannot sleep. Therefore their physical vehicles cannot be properly repaired during normal hours of rest.

So what we are doing in these studies is simply becoming conscious of our own natural processes. This is nothing to be concerned about. Be patient, keep up your practice, and work on your fear. If there's anything to be afraid of, it's NOT knowing where you go at night in the astral plane!

Does this help?

Joyful in hope, suffering in tribulation, be thou constant in thy prayer.

Benedictis, qui venit in nomine Domini. Osanna in excelsis.

"Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest!"

Yes, thank you for putting it into perspective and helping me see it for what it is.
