Those who make the mistake of attributing all the sinister, negative characteristics of the descending serpent to the ascending serpent, definitely fail in the Work upon themselves. - Samael Aun Weor (The Great Rebellion)

What are the negative characteristics? Are we referring to lust, greed, anger, etc. and if so can you provide an example of how one could mistake it as a product of the ascending serpent?

Blessings.

This misapprehension of the nature of the Luciferic fire in relation with Fohat has to do with the direction and utilization of one's energies. Remember that "Wherever we direct attention, we expend creative energy." Those who mistakenly affirm the lustful, diabolic and inferior atomic intelligences of the Kundabuffer through the misuse of one's creative energies, whether through fornication or the conscious development of power within the negative serpent, fail in the Great Work.

We must comprehend that the ego is very subtle and works to manipulate the consciousness and our psychic energies through the wrong use of Fohat. Even if one practices chastity, but still directs ones energies through lust, anger and pride (lacking ethical discipline throughout the day and in daily meditation), the negative serpent is fortified. There are many who confuse the forces of the ego with the Being, and attribute spirituality to the diabolic. Consciousness must direct energy. But if we identify with the ego, we fortify it horribly.

Joyful in hope, suffering in tribulation, be thou constant in thy prayer.

So to put it simply, he is referring to individuals who are working with the Arcanum A.Z.F. but are NOT working on dissolving the Ego?

That is one reference or application of that phrase. It is most definitely true that those who work in alchemy but do not dissolve the ego fortify the Kundabuffer organ horribly. Let us remember the case of Brutus in The Mystery of the Golden Blossom, whereby betraying the Logos Samael, he fell into black magic. Although Brutus practiced scientific chastity within his physical body (by refraining from the animal orgasm), he did not direct that energy in a way that was conducive to his Being. Therefore, he lost everything, since that force was misdirected and used to feed his traitorous egos.

Joyful in hope, suffering in tribulation, be thou constant in thy prayer.
