Master Samael states that a soul that has committed an extremely evil act is taken from the body, precipitated into the abyss, and replaced by a demon. He states that such a demon is devoid of essence.

How can that be? If the essence is consciousness, doesn't every entity, good or evil, have to posses an essence?

A machine (ie. a robot) can appear to have consciousness, but does not. It can talk, laugh, cry, walk, etc, but is nothing but a program and a collections of devices.

A demon is a machine: a mechanical construct that repeats its program. Those demons reside in the submerged internal worlds. They are the "empty shells" that once housed consciousness, whether as humanoids like us or mere egos we created.

When the failed soul is replaced by a demon, it is usually their own ego (or egos) that takes control of the physical body. That ego is a demon that is very robust, made by the persons own actions. That is why the persons relatives do not notice the change: the body is inhabited by the same ego they have always known; they may have never seen the Essence of the person, thus do not miss it when it is removed.

Thank you.

I always believed that the purpose of the abyss was to liberate the essence, or consciousness, from the ego.

Having no consciousness, what would happen to the demon we are speaking of when it enters the abyss after the death of the physical body?

It is destroyed, similar to anything dead in nature.

But then what is it that animates these shells? If there is no consciousness, how can the shells still live? I thought that it was the consciousness inside that made them become alive. Thus saying we have multiple "individuals" within us.

You could say that since everything that exists has consciousness to some degree or another, then yes, there remains "consciousness" in the atoms or substructure of demons, traitors, etc. What Samael Aun Weor was indicating (as had others before him) is the separation of the Being from the demon. In these statements, he was saying Essence to indicate the spark of unconditioned consciousness (the embryo of soul) that remains connected to the Innermost. A demon or "soulless" person no longer has that within them. They are instead an "empty shell." What remains is a program, a script, played out by the personality and the egos remaining. Yes: trapped within all of that are sparks of consciousness, but we cannot consider them as consciousness that has the capability of self-awareness, cognizance, remorse, etc. since the Essence is no longer there, the connection to the Being that in us prompts us towards the path and provokes our spiritual longings, remorse, etc. Without that connection, such "soulless" creatures are truly like sparks that drift away from the fire and vanish into the night.

I understand. One last question. With all this being said. Were does the will of these demons comes from? If they don't have the essence anymore. The ones that continue constantly to fight against Christ. If they are machines. Mechanical remnants of the person who created it, then how can we explain a soul like javeh who seems to act with intelligence and determination against divinity?

Fallen angels like Jahve are different, since they have solar bodies. In such cases, even though they are separated from their Innermost, they still wield vastly more power than common humanoids. Their will is formed by the incredible density and compaction of their defects. You can see some parallel if you study physics or astronomy, and learn how much mass can be compacted into a very tiny space, and in turn, how much influence such bodies exert. Fallen angels are like that.
