The word "Kabir" is equally well-known in India and in the Middle East,
although in each case the word means different things (in many areas it
is used as a proper name). From Arabic it means "great" or "the Most
High." It is usually attached to the name of a great teacher, as "Sri"
is in India. Esoterically, it refers to the Divine Calf, the child of
the Divine Mother (who is symbolized by a cow in India, Greece, etc.) The word is related to the ancient and mysterious Cabeiri of the Greek mysteries.
Kabir is also the name of an Indian religious leader who pioneered a
religious movement that combined elements of Islam and Hinduism and is
considered the precursor of Sikhism.
