<p>Can you please clarify how the following passage, and those like it are interpreted? Are they symbolic references? Or is the student asked to expect them literally?</p>
<p>"THE GUARDIAN OF THE THRESHOLD</p>
<p class="p1">The first trial that the candidate has to face is the trial of the Guardian of the Threshold. This is the reflection of the “I”, the intimate depths of the “I”. Many are they who fail this terrible trial.</p>
<p class="p1">In the internal worlds the candidate has to invoke the Guardian of the Threshold. A terrifying electrical hurricane precedes the terrible apparition.</p>
<p class="p1">The larva of the Threshold is armed with a terrible hypnotic power. In fact this monster has all the horrible ugliness of our own sins. It is the living mirror of our own evils. The struggle is terrible; face to face, hand to hand combat. If the Guardian wins, the candidate be comes enslaved by the horrible monster."</p>
<p class="p1">Thank you.</p>
<p> </p>

No problem James. Your question is completely valid.

Personally, I have had astral experiences that were actually having hand to hand combat, with swords, etc. The thing is, the internal worlds are worlds of symbolism. So what is literal in the astral plane (dreams/visions) is what we would consider allegorical to our physical life. So the terms begin to break down a bit. When you are struggling with your ego, you will find yourself in battle, literally, in the astral plane. You will be chased by mobs, by demons, by monsters, by dragons, etc., just like a nightmare. But if we have willpower and temperance, we defeat the demons, which is our own self. Yes, in my own experience, I have stabbed, strangled, and beheaded 'people' in the astral plane. It sounds bizarre or even scandalous, but it is the truth.

If we fail, we are enslaved by the demon, which again is our own ego. If you fail at test in the superior worlds, so long as you continue to work on yourself, to correct mistakes, then you will be tested again. So long as you are completing the requirements to advance, you will be tested again and again.

The Guardian is our own ego, our own Satan. We must defeat him again and again. The great battle, the difficult battle, is not something we experience in one day or night. It is our life, which contains dangers within and without.

The ordeals are faced in the internal worlds, and also in relationship to the ordeals of life. There is always a relationship between internal experiences and external life. But the ordeals literally happen.

I'm getting closer but not there quite yet... bare with me... I am trying to determine if statements like, "The struggle is terrible; face to face, hand to hand combat." are to be taken as allegorical description of an internal psychological battle wherein we finally extinguish our ego or whether Samael is saying that at some point, in astral travel for example, we will actually live out a violent epic battle similar to a CGI action movie. Also the last sentence:
If the Guardian wins, the candidate be comes enslaved by the horrible monster
implies a finality which I find puzzling, unless it is simply a vague allegory suggesting that if you do not overcome your internal demons, i.e. lust, anger, pride, etc., you will be back to the path of suffering.

I am new to Samael's writings so forgive these newbie questions, but enquiring minds want to Gno.
