In the practical astrology book there is reference to use of a regular deck of cards as a tarot deck, however it states that there are 56 cards in a tarot deck and to refer to the 22 major arcana and the symbol on the card (hearts, clubs etc) for the element. Am I correct then to interpret that each suit should go up to the number 14 to make up the missing 4 cards?

also, if there are 78 tarot plates, why are there only 56 cards?

Thank you,

Your questions are answered in the book:

"The Tarot is a book as ancient as the ages, and is intimately related with the wisdom of the planetary gods. This book is made up of the Tarot deck: 78 cards, 22 cards of which are called the Major Arcana, and 56 of which are known as the Minor Arcana."

All 56 cards of the Minor Arcana are based on these four aces and on the ten numbers of our decimal system. For example, a four of clubs is the Arcanum 4, the Emperor, the symbol of the ace of clubs repeated four times. The same happens with the rest of the 56 cards of the Minor Arcana. Intuitively interpret these cards, combining the natural element with the Major Arcana and the problem is resolved. For example, a six of diamonds would be interpreted by combining the Sixth Arcanum with the element air, or “soul,” symbolized by the diamonds; this would say: “a love affair,” and so on, successively.
