Hi instructors.

I remember reading somewhere in one of Samaels books how a bachelor or bachelorette when practicing pranayama should try hold and retain their breath for up to 2 or 3 minutes but of course having to build up to it gradually. I can’t seem to find that passage now. Perhaps one of the instructors could link it here for me if they can find it?

Thank you.

Yes, some do retain the Ham for several minutes. But only if you are able to stay relaxed and if you do not overfill your lungs so that they are tense. But if you can only hold the breath for a few seconds, it's fine as well. You should not hyperventilate.

https://glorian.org/connect/blog/what-is-pranayama#more-pranayama-techniques - maybe you can find it here, as there are the hyperlinks?

I too wanted to ask if I can do the HamSa breathing by also retaining for 2-3 mins each breath. So slow mental 'hammmm' while inhaling slowly , retaining 2-3 mins, then exhaling with fast 'Sa!'
Can we do it this way? given that one of the pranayamas recommended is to retain the air for long periods, and the other one HamSa doesn't specify this, I was wondering if we can just combine them like this.

@Marius I've been doing the wim Hof breathing exercises where he hyperventilates then he holds. I thought that I can transmute with them too. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tybOi4hjZFQ&vl=en - It feels like this too helped to clean the paths of breath , the nadis.

I shall do the HamSa instead , good to know, thank you for your answer!
