Is physical exercise such as jogging, weight training, and brisk walking as effective as pranayama for transmuting sexual energy?

Holding my breath gives me anxiety so I'm looking for an alternative to pranayama.

Physical exercise and sports will put the energy into the physical body. It's perfectly fine, but this is not how we accumulate energy for our consciousness.

Light exercises like brisk walking are also recommended, if we sit a lot at work or do not move much throughout the day. This is because such an exercise may bring your stale/resting energy into movement. But even then, we need to take this energy and consciously move it to our higher inner aspects. It will not move "up" automatically.

Whatever gives you anxiety, please consider that if a Pranayama description says something like "hold your breath for 30 seconds", you never should enforce this. If you can handle holding your breath for even one second, this is good and this will work. And you don't need to fill the lungs to full capacity. Just take as much breath up to your comfortable capacity. An exercise like Pranayama is supposed to make you relaxed, but not hyperventilating.

When you get to know the practice better, you will be able to stay relaxed physically, but also emotionally and mentally. Then you can try to increase the time holding the air.

Here is an overview of different techniques, so you might find something suitable for you:

Note that there are Pranayamas where you perform alternate nostril breathing (i.e. "Christian Egyptian Pranayama"), so this might suit you better. You can also transmute with mantras (i.e. "I E O U A") and also with runes (i.e. "Rune Fah").

Thank you so much. I've tried the Egyptian pranayama and found the Ham-Sah pranayama easier, so I've stuck with that.

I previously thought I needed to hold my breath for several seconds, so I've been doing 3 seconds and filling my lungs to the max. Glad to hear that's not necessary.

Thanks again.
