Was this tradition of choosing a "godfather" or "godmother" in gnostic second chambers originated in the modern day gnostic movement by Samael? Or does it originate from other more ancient gnostic schools?

Does Samael write about this, and in which books? I don't understand the point in having to choose a physical "godfather", can our inner being not provide us with all the guidance we need?

I was under the impression this "choosing of a godfather" was something that was done intimately, when an initiate advances in the path, could choose to learn directly, and consistently from the buddha, krishna, or master jesus, as their chosen godfather.

Ignorantly, to me, this seems to me, as a tradition without sufficient explanation at this point. Is this something that is explained before the act of choosing, or is it up to ourselves to research and understand the point of this initiation?

Second Chamber Initiation is a ceremony basically for the spiritual integration of the soul with the White Brotherhood. One of the requirements for such ceremonial connection is to have a second member sponsor for the neophyte. The sponsor accepts to act as an advocate [godparent] for the neophyte’s spiritual development.

Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah,
the Root of David, has prevailed to open the book,
and to loose the seven seals thereof. - Revelation 5: 5
