I am currently embarking in a purification process regarding a number of vices involving substance abuse, notably the ones listed in the title. I understand these are tremendous blocks to spiritual progress and one of the first vows is to give up intoxicants.
My line of questioning is this: What are you the psychological and spiritual effects of substances? In particular, marijuana. It induces a cloudy and befuddled mind that perceives thought in an abstract way. I've read that it is darkness that destroys the Christic light, and that there are certain cults of Black Magic that worship Siva through this drug. What is the purpose of this plant on earth? Is simply being misused for nefarious purposes? The pleasurable sensation it induces certainly causes damage, but is this damage performed to all of our seven bodies, astral, mental etc.?
Is Algol a true demon, a Being awakened in darkness who seeks to trap humanity in ego? Or is this an expression of speech meant to describe the destructive effects of alcohol?
I clearly understand from the teachings that all intoxicants strengthen the pluralized ego, the Red Devils of Seth that seethe within. What is the method in which they cause damage to the many humans trapped in their seductive webs?
Thank for for any wisdom on this issue you might have to offer.

"With the sinister demon Algol, it is impossible to make compromises, arrangements, or any kind of crooked deal. Alcohol is very treacherous and sooner or later will stab us in the back. Many people with Thelema (will) only drink one or two glasses a day; a terrific ruse, isn’t it?" - The Mystery of the Golden Blossom
