Who said what? Do any of them know anything about the personal lives of the great masters? I sincerely doubt it. In any case, sometimes those stories are symbolic, sometimes they are not.
The main thing is to understand the path itself, which is accomplished only by paying our debts.
In order to reach the light, we have to pay our debts. Over the course of our lifetimes, we have accrued many debts with many people. Sometimes, it is necessary to pay the person directly, physically, in their presence, in accordance with the debt. That is why we tend to pass through so many circumstances, jobs, friends, scenarios, relationships........ etc. Of course, most of us face these circumstances with our consciousness asleep, so we react mechanically, and deepen the debt instead of paying it off by humbly accepting our suffering.
An initiate working with higher forces has to face deeper karma, thus has to face more painful circumstances. Sometimes, that involves being shamed, ridiculed, criticized, and worse. Sometimes it also means that an initiate has to pass through marriages, one after another, as dictated by debts that are owed. No one wants to face that, but most of us have such debts. However, to be at the level where one can handle paying them is another thing altogether.
On another note, you should understand that "the one spouse" we need is inside of us, not outside. Our true spouse is not physical, but is related to the development of the soul.
