The problem is the english word "desire." It is too broad.
Desire simply means "longing," but there are different kinds: the longings of the ego are different from the longings of the consciousness, even though we have trouble distinguishing between them.
Suffering is caused by the desires of the ego: lust, pride, envy, anger, etc. Those are the desires we must focus on initially.
