Speaking of experiences within the astral realm, when we encounter individuals that appear to radiate a sense of spiritual superiority, producing an impression in our minds that they are advanced in some way, maybe due to them appearing as someone that we consider a Master, or instructors that are we know who are more advanced than we are (spiritually speaking), yet their sublime teachings are clearly degenerative when looked at beyond their appearances and associated sensations. Are these beings generally our own ego's or can they be actual black magicians attempting to sidetrack our efforts by appealing to our own weaknesses, passions etc?

Due to some weakness in defense, this scenario can be problematic, in cases where incense and perfumes are not generally helping much, what is the best line of defense when things get difficult?

What can we do about the repeated cycle of progress, stagnation and retrogression?

To know whether you are confronted by an ego or a black magician, you must use your intuition.

In many cases, students encounter their own defects in the astral plane. To know whether you are confronting a black magician or not depends on your level of awakened consciousness.

The best weapon we have is an appropriate, internal psychological state, according to Samael Aun Weor in Treatise of Revolutionary Psychology.

The best solution to the problem of retrogression and stagnation is continued, persistent work in mystical death. With death comes the new. If the seed does not die, the Tree of Life is not born within us!

Would the rejection to comply with certain demands of the ego classify as a type of mystical death? Obviously this is not the same as comprehension, judgement and elimination in a state of profound meditation, but to some degree its still an understanding and action towards eliminating a harmful element.

For instance, using lust as an example; When lust becomes active, there is a temptation to identify with it and go along with its demands, as one begins to follow this silent whisper, one begins to realize that it is leading them straight to the peak sexual experience, aka orgasm.

In those moments when one has been taken in by the lure of temptation and the lustful fires have been ignited, a clear moment arises at some point during the experience, where one becomes aware of what they are doing, a simple spark of cognizance, in that moment one realizes that there is a danger to continue, as if one is nearing a cliff edge and intuitively feels that danger is beyond a few steps ahead. Then, depending on the momentum already created and the power of ones will, they either stop right there and end the activity or continues forward beyond the precipice.

In cases like the above, there is a terrible struggle, one may be losing the battle and has already taken quite a beating, yet in the end due to a spark of awareness and quick reflexes, makes a move which abruptly ends the battle in their favor. Does this sort of victory have any merit?

There are obviously other cases where one is able to completely dismantle the lust, anger etc as it appears, yet due to a fluctuating mind, emotions and state of awareness this sort of consistency to overcome them is not there.

To reject the desire of an ego and to not act upon its will is equivalent to starving a wild beast. This does not kill the animal outright, but makes it weaker and easier to kill.

If you feed the lion repeatedly, it will soon devour yourself. But if you starve it by not giving into its desires, you make it weak to the point that you may slowly work towards its annihilation.

As Swami Sivananda taught us, to stop feeding desire is to strengthen one's virtue.

Obviously what you are saying is logical, however in my experience, the lion is already quite strong, so how can we offer a strong enough resistance against such a beast?
