It is said our experiences unfold according to our personal karma; what we experience is just a repeat of our personal drama. Does this mean the knowledge I am experiencing and progress I am making through your teachings are events that have already happened? Does this mean I have failed to achieve liberation in my past spiritual aspiration?

It is interesting to note that what is acquired is never lost; capacity remains although memory disappears; that which has been learnt is stored in the sub-conscious mind and goes to the formation of character. In each life we quickly recapitulate the progress we have made in previous lives till we come to the point where we left off, then we begin the laborious process of acquiring the new.
- Dion Fortune, The Training and Work of an Initiate

For many of us, it is possible (likely, even) that we did do some work on this path in a previous life. Only you can judge how much of your present progress is something you are recapitulating from the past, and how much is new advancement that you have made in this lifetime.

However, it seems obvious from the fact that we are still trapped in darkness and suffering that we did not achieve full liberation in our previous existence. It is therefore necessary to scrutinize our understanding and our practice in order to comprehend the obstacles that prevented us from succeeding in the past.
