In discussions with my father, there is some conjecture for the history of persecution of Gnosticism from 500 a.d. up until the crusades, in spite of the obvious sentiments of disdain and exclusivity uttered by Constantine and Theodosius. I sent him the quote regarding some of the literary works that were recovered during the Renaissance thought to have been eradicated prior.
I'm wondering if there is other historical evidence, and conjecture I can present to someone who asks about the persecution of Gnosticism/esoterism during that timeframe, many thanks.

Many scholars have written about the history of Gnosticism, including Elaine Pagels. Rather than study history, we prefer to study ourselves. This is the essence of self-knowledge: Gnosis.
For thirty years I sought God. But when I looked carefully I found that in reality God was the seeker and I the sought. -Bayazid al-Bastami
