I have a simple question that I am hoping someone can shed some light on.

When we begin this work, we seem to go through cycles of experiences, sparks of consciousness relative to our progress and effort, and likewise periods of darkness, inactivity. Are these experiences, particularly for the neophyte, always a product of his or her own effort, or are they sometimes given to inspire and create opportunities to receive guidance?

I wonder because sometimes I make great effort and think that I am doing well, but I receive little. Other times, I struggle or suffer in many ways and receive a lot more. Is this simply the law of karma in action?
This phenomena results from a few factors. It can be the will of the Being, karmic influences within one's work, or the disciple's own tenacity and effort to awaken. Recognizing precisely what is going on often takes more hindsight than foresight, or better said, much work, experimentation, and very hard-earned experience.
