<p>Is there any reason that one wouldn't want to meditate in the supine position regularly as long as they could avoid falling asleep?  I feel like my ability to deeply relax is much greater when I am lying down.  Does anyone have experience meditating in this way?  Does it have any limitations?</p>
<p>Also, sometimes after meditating I will get in bed and fall asleep and <em>then</em> awaken outside my body.  This is followed by some unusual astral event such as a hailstorm which forces me to abandon the experience.  I get the feeling that I am being "forced out" of the experience.  Is there any reason to believe this is the case?</p>

Lying down is fine for meditation. In fact, you should practice every night going into meditation when you lying down for the night for sleep.

On the other hand, by having a practice while sitting, you are working with the ability to relax in a more upright position, which is good.

In mystical experiences, the sky often represents your mind. Hail storms or violent thunderstorms can represent a conflict in the mind. You have to meditate to know what it really means.
