Hello Instructors,

I was reading some writings of Sivananda and in a section relating to pranayama he talks about alternate nostril breathing using a 3, 12, 6 count or any numbers to the 1:3:2 ratio. So basically breathe in for 3 counts, hold the breath for 12 counts, breathe out for 6 counts.

How important is this ratio to the this type of pranayama or should one just do what is comfortable at the time?

Thanks in advance

The ratios might work for you. However, what’s most important is your comfort, relaxation, concentration, and prayer. It is better and simpler to listen to your body. The purpose of the ratios, though, is to have a deep retention, before moving towards a relaxed exhalation. You must gauge your body, lungs, and needs as you practice. Relaxation and retention, again, is most important, which is why Swami Sivananda provided the ratios as he did. But again, you must listen to your body and comfort zone.

Joyful in hope, suffering in tribulation, be thou constant in thy prayer.

Imagine the energies circulating throughout the two channels, Ida and Pingala, to the brain and to the heart. You can read about the different forms of pranayama throughout the literature of Samael Aun Weor. :)
