Why Jesus appears to selected number of people, including complete atheists during near-death experience or murderers like Paul of Tarsus, just to name a few, and changes their life dramatically? Is this selection of a few lucky ones somehow related to their good deeds in their previous lives?
Firstly, how can we know why Jesus does what he does? We are very far from being able to understand someone with a mind like his.

Secondly, considering how asleep this humanity is, how many of those people were merely projecting images of Jesus? Fear, trauma, shock, etc can cause the mind to see many subjective images, even images of gods, heavens, etc. Just as we dream lies, we also see them when near death: it is the same subjective, false imagery. We do not see the reality, but a projection.
