Dear Maia,
There are some people who tend to always be finding new jobs, living in new places, having new partners, friends, etc. There are some who seem to always make dramatic changes in the external world. That can be a way to avoid working on ourselves, and people can do this for decades if not their whole life, always avoiding their own mind.
Nevertheless, we should not be fanatics in the other regard either. Sometimes, we can and should find a new job. In fact, some people can actually be afraid of obtaining a better job because of fears of being in a new place, fear of talking to the boss, etc., etc., so they say that staying in their job despite its bad conditions is good for their spiritual work.
You can hide from your own mind whether you stay in your job, or you constantly change jobs. Only you can know that.
Having a new environment, with new impressions, new people, new routine, can help us get perspective on things if we know how to observe and meditate.
We have to find our Middle Way. Each of us has to make our own life and no one should go about telling others what to do. Yet, many times, it is better to try and reflect upon a mistake made, then to never do anything at all.
It is through our relationships we discover something about ourselves.
The most painful ones are the best instructors. When a student is in pain, there is no question about what is the right thing to do: comprehend the pain and eliminate the ego that suffers.
The Being has qualities of overflowing contentment, expansiveness, freedom...
How could one progress in the psychological work without clear notions of what is in pain? Often, a student thinks he or she is doing well but actually they are being superficial, and are self-hiding from their own pain and ugliness.
Pain, afflictions, and fear are qualities of ego. It is a lie to say the we "tried" but "lost patience" with someone. Actually, the ego never had patience in the first place. It just turns out that the mind could not hide from its own pain any longer, so some type of blowout or breakdown occurs. Then, finally, once again it becomes clear on what to meditate upon. Finally, the ego could not hide from itself.
How easy it is, once the obvious pain subsides for just a few moments, to forget to do the work.... Such circumstances are better for going deep into meditation, yet who takes advantage of it?
Some suffer the paralysis of enjoyment and some the paralysis of suffering....
Pain is not needed to walk the path, yet, pain is the result of karma that must be paid in order to progress. In other words, no one forced us to act in ways that created our karma, and therefore the pain was not dictated by any external thing. Yet, because we have karma for pain, we will have painful circumstances. We have to comprehend our circumstances without being identified with them.
