What i dont understand is the idea of Involution.
As i understand it when we come to the end of 108 existences without self- realising we go to hell & pay our Karma & the <a href="/faqs/psychology/1761-what-is-ego.html" title="In spiritual tradition, "ego" refers to psychological defects" target="_parent" >ego</a> is eventually removed.
Are we also then present for a time in animal bodies?, as elementals of plants & of minerals while we are in hell

If we do not succeed in eliminating our ego through the spiritual work, we will devolve in nature. The descent or devolution is a multidimensional process. Right now, we are multidimensional. Most of our psyche is not here in the physical body; it is not integrated, single, but is dispersed in the fifth dimension. What we sense as the "unity or singularity of ourselves" is an illusion created by the brain and the body. When we die, this "sense of self" is lost. Watch a schizophrenic person, and you will see a mirror of what we really are inside. We are a mess. Those who remember their dreams or observe the insanity in their minds realize that there are innumerable "personalities" living inside of us. ALll of that has to be destroyed, one way or another.

After death, through devolution, parts of our consciousness can be in different bodies, paying karma. This begins in the animal kingdom, and gradually descends into simpler forms. The consciousness, being splintered into thousands of karmic bonds, suffers immensely in many ways. Only at the end is everything gradually restored to its primal simplicity, then freed from hell. It is not necessary that the physical forms be utilized however. It depends upon the karma involved. For example, in the coming transformation, the earth will not be able to host physical bodies for plants and animals, since the planet will be purged with fire. Yet the hell realms will continue to function as needed.

It was stated in one lecture that by observing the processing of animals by todays food production system, we can see that the consciousness in each of those animal bodies is truly in hell. Worse, the consciousness in those bodies cycles from body to body, suffering, then killed, then born to suffer more, until gradually moving on to pay in a different way. This scenario is unique in human history, and has grave implications for us.

Our situation is more terrible than can be described. The state of our consciousness is so degenerated and complex, it escapes analogy. Stated as simply as possible, devolution is how nature eliminates the complication, by means of immense forces.
