When vocalizing aloud, the length of the exhalation determines the length of the vowel sound. When using a mantra silently, mentally, the length can be whatever you wish.

These practices are best done with eyes closed, while visualizing what you are doing: sending the vowel into the glands.

Okay so uttering the iiiiiii mentally works? I would have thought the "vibrations" are caused by us uttering them aloud.

The necessary vibrations are produced by the action of consciousness, not by the vibration of the physical matter in the throat.

Someone can repeat a mantra a million times, but if they do it unconsciously, without paying attention to what they are doing, they will get no result. On the other hand, someone who knows how to be conscious of using the mantra can use it one time — even silently — and create enormous change.
