After one has freed some of the essence of consciousness from the ego how does one awaken it.

The main point is that essence is already awake. It is we who are asleep. The Path of Awakening and the creation of the human soul are possible because within our psyche there is something real that connects us with That Which is Real.
In terms of the Occult Anatomy of human beings, Essence is an emanation of Being. Even when it is trapped within the ego, the essence is still awake because it is a part of the Being. When you talk about awakening the essence I can only assume that you mean liberating the essence trapped in ego. In that sense, all work done to liberate the essence from ego is awakening that essence. But it's important to realize that the essence is already perfect and we are not doing something TO it so much as doing something WITH it. If people are seeds then essence is the life in the seed. We could also say that essence becomes "awakened" through the creation of a human soul, meaning that the adept has used his essence to become a soul. But this does not mean that the essence is the soul. The essence, which is Spirit, remains an unconditioned value relative to the human soul.
For the Theurgist there are no shortcuts. There is a preparatory period of work on self realization just to become a "normal" person with a normal will, with a percentage of free essence that allows the Three Brains to work together voluntarily as a unit. There definitely has to be a period of Purification in the life of any adept where we eliminate the worst defects that are crippling us. When this period is successfully completed through education, sincerity of purpose and Karma, there comes a period of Growth. After this comes a period of Development.
