Hi Instructors,

I wanted some clarification about adjusting one's practice during menstruation or pregnancy.

I know that we should not do any kind of transmutation exercise -- including mantras, runes, rites of rejuvenation, and pranayama. But there are some practices that I don't yet know whether they fall under such categories:

For example, should we not say the Morning Prayer ("We are strong. We are rich. We are filled with luck and harmony. Om, Om, Om.";) listed in A Gnostic Prayer Book, because of the mantra that ends it?

Should practices that involve mantras, like the Circle of Protection, be replaced with simple prayers to one's Innermost for protection and blessing? Or are there alternatives that we might consider when our bodies are cleansing themselves or gestating a new life?

Finally, while I know that attempts at meditation are good to practice during menstruation and pregnancy, after Retrospection and meditating on an ego that has manifested during the day, are prayers to our Divine Mother for the elimination of egos also appropriate?

Thank you for your time in reading these beginner's questions. :)

Not all mantras transmute energy within the body. For example, the circle of protection is necessary and useful: you can use it. This includes prayers for protection, etc. Those are not transmuting energy within the body, but utilizing your energy for protection (which, in the case of pregnancy, is doubly important).

There is also the matter of intensity: saying Om three times in a prayer would have very different results from chanting Om for an hour. :) So I expect saying the prayer would be fine.

Finally, yes you can pray for the elimination of egos, but I would recommend against doing pranayamas at that time. The prayer is sufficient.

My wife and I are attending this retreat, but she is scheduled to menstruate during the retreat. What activities besides mediation can she participate in?

If it is appropriate, I would like to re-ask the above questions. They are still of interest. :) No worries if they are not answerable at this time, though!
