I know that the Master Samael recommended learning to meditate in a laying down posture or any other position in which the body is relaxed and able to concentrate. What about Pranayama? Can that also be done laying down, or is it important to sit up to keep pressure off the spine?

A straight spine is important, but it doesn't matter if it is vertical or horizontal. The energy that is being harnessed is not tridimensional, thus is not limited by gravity. :)
